Unaware, as I was, that City had been 3-1 down to Sunderland until late in the game today, the discovery that the blues had drawn 3-3 with Sunderland drew a yelp of satisfaction when I finally saw the results, shortly after five O'Clock. Even when I later became aware of the full nature of the match at Eastlands it was hard to surpress the feeling of glee that had been my first emotion in reaction to the scoreline.
Of course City can argue that they staged a stunning fightback which: will give them heart/shows their character/won a point that may prove crucial - most connected with United would have been delighted with a draw before the kick off. The fact that it could so easily have been a defeat for Mancini's men is only a slight blemish on an otherwise excellent outcome.
And in many ways it has been the kind of week that has had United fans rubbing their hands at the antics across town. First we had Patrick Veiera making controversial noises about United and referees. Then came the Mancini/Balotelli bust up in training. After that, Aguero suffered a ''stupid'' injury which Mancini refused to discuss before the Italian was reported as having said that he does not trust Balotelli.
A few weeks ago, we published our predictions for the remainder of the title race and whilst we did not predict the comic antics at eastlands, as you will see from the chart below, we had City on 71 points after 31 games. Thanks to Sunderland, City are doing just as we expected.
